Lesson 10 · Claude Code

Recognize Claude Code without feeling intimidated

Learn what Claude Code is, when an accountant probably does not need it, and the safest first words to use if the job requires it.

Primary source

Anthropic's official Claude Code overview describes Claude Code as an agentic coding tool that can read a codebase, edit files, run commands, and integrate with development tools. For most accounting work, that means Claude Code is optional unless her employer gives her technical tasks.

The one idea

Decision tree: use Chat or Cowork unless working with code, scripts, or terminals

Claude Code is not “better Claude.” It is Claude for a different environment: software projects, scripts, terminals, and developer tools.

Specificity scaffold: asking for help in Claude Code

Vague attempt

Fix this.

This is risky because Claude Code may not know what “fix” means or what changes are allowed.

Improved attempt

I am not technical. Before changing anything, explain what this folder appears to contain, what task you think I am asking for, and what files you would need to inspect. Do not edit files or run commands until I approve.

This sets role, goal, constraints, and a permission checkpoint.

Anatomy of the safe first prompt

Context: “I am not technical.”

Goal: “Explain what this folder appears to contain.”

Success criteria: “Tell me what task you think I am asking for.”

Constraint: “Do not edit files or run commands.”

Checkpoint: “Until I approve.”

Safety rails

Safety rails for Claude Code: explain, preview, permission, backup

If Claude Code appears at work, she should slow down and ask it to explain before doing anything.

Practice: safe first message

If an employer opens Claude Code and says, “Use this,” she can paste:

I am new to Claude Code and I am not a developer. Please explain what you can see in plain English. Do not edit files, run commands, delete anything, or make changes until you show me a plan and I approve it.

Then refine it by adding the actual work goal, for example: “My goal is to understand whether this folder contains an accounting automation or report template.”

Independent attempt

Write a one-sentence Claude Code safety prompt for this situation:

Your manager asks you to open a folder that may contain a report automation, but you do not know what the files do.

Include: context, goal, and permission checkpoint.

Accounting safety reminder

Do not approve commands, file edits, deletions, or access to sensitive folders unless a technical coworker or approved process confirms it is safe. Claude Code can change real files.

Quick check

Question: Claude Code proposes running an unfamiliar command. What is the safest response?

A = Approve immediately.
B = Ask what it does.
C = Ignore all warnings.

Memory practice

From memory, name the four Claude Code safety rails.

Show answer

Explain, preview, permission, backup.

Ask the teaching agent

If she sees a terminal, command, repository, or unfamiliar developer tool, ask: “Help me understand what Claude Code is about to do in plain English before I approve anything.”
