Lesson 8 · Claude Cowork
Start using Claude Cowork without losing control
Learn the difference between Chat and Cowork, and practice writing a safe Cowork task for longer accounting work.
Primary source
Anthropic's official Get started with Claude Cowork explains that Cowork brings Claude Code-like agentic capabilities to knowledge work without requiring a terminal. It can take on multi-step tasks, create polished outputs, work with projects, and may continue work remotely depending on plan and rollout.
The one idea
Use Claude Chat when you want a conversation. Use Claude Cowork when you want to hand Claude a task with a finished output.
The Cowork control panel
Cowork can act more independently than a normal chat. That is useful, but it also means your instructions must include boundaries and review points.
A safe Cowork task template
I want you to help with [task]. The finished output should be [deliverable]. Use only [approved sources or fake data]. Do not [restricted actions]. First, show me your plan and wait for my approval before doing the full task. At the end, include a review checklist of facts, numbers, assumptions, and permissions.
Practice: turn a chat request into a Cowork task
Start with this normal chat request:
Help me prepare for month-end close.
Now use this safer Cowork version:
I want you to help me prepare a month-end close practice pack. The finished output should include: a checklist, a short manager update email, and a table of risks to verify. Use fake data only. Do not use real client or company information. First, show me your plan and wait for my approval before creating the full pack. At the end, include a review checklist of facts, numbers, assumptions, and permissions.
When not to use Cowork
Do not use Cowork for real payroll, tax filings, client-sensitive actions, sending messages, changing files, or using connected systems unless the employer has approved the workflow and you understand what Claude can access.
Quick check
Question: What should you ask Cowork to do before it completes a long task?
B = Show a plan first.
C = Guess missing data.
Memory practice
From memory, name the five Cowork control points.
Show answer
Outcome, limits, plan, checkpoints, review.
Ask the teaching agent
If she has a task that feels too large for a normal chat, ask: “Help me turn this into a safe Claude Cowork task with outcome, limits, plan, checkpoints, and review.”
