Lesson 2 · Claude website

Revise Claude’s answer when it is not useful yet

Learn how to fix three common problems: the answer is too long, too vague, or not in the format you need.

Primary source

Anthropic's official Get started with Claude recommends that beginners iterate: refine prompts and ask follow-up questions instead of expecting the first answer to be perfect.

The one idea

Ask, inspect, revise, review loop

When Claude gives an imperfect answer, do not start over. First inspect the answer, then give Claude one clear instruction to improve it.

“This is useful, but it is too long. Make it 5 bullets, keep the accounting terms, and use plain language.”

The three most useful follow-ups

Three revision tools: shorten, clarify, reformat

1. If it is too long

Ask Claude to shrink the answer.

Make this shorter. Keep only the five actions I should take.

2. If it is too vague

Ask Claude to be concrete.

Give me a specific accounting example for each point.

3. If the format is wrong

Ask Claude to reshape it.

Turn this into a table with columns: Task, Owner, Due date, Evidence.

Practice: revise a month-end checklist

Open Claude and paste this first prompt:

I am an accountant preparing a month-end close checklist for a small business. Draft a checklist using fake details only.

Now choose one follow-up depending on what Claude gives you:

Accounting safety reminder

Revision does not remove the need for review. Claude can produce confident-sounding mistakes. Before using an accounting answer, check formulas, totals, assumptions, deadlines, and policy requirements.

Quick check

Question: Claude gives a good answer, but it is three pages long. What should you ask?

A = “Make it 5 bullets.”
B = “Add more background.”
C = “Use a different tone.”

Memory practice

From memory, name the three revision moves.

Shorten, clarify, reformat.

Ask the teaching agent

If Claude gives an answer you do not know how to fix, paste the answer here and ask: “Which follow-up should I use: shorten, clarify, or reformat?”
